You can do this with Windows XP without any other software required.

To copy a CD-ROM, you must first copy the contents of the CD-ROM that you want to copy to the CD-ROM staging area, and then record a new CD-ROM using this data.

1.If you have a standard CDROM drive as well as a CD-R drive, drag the contents of the host CD-ROM to the CD-R drive icon. If you have only a CD-R drive, you can manually copy the contents of the original CD-ROM to a folder on the hard disk, and then drag the data to the CD-R drive that has had the original media removed.

NOTE: You can also right-click the files, click Send To, and then click the name or drive letter of your writable CD drive to copy the files.

2.To initiate the record process, either right-click the CD-R drive, and then click Write these files to CD, or double-click My Computer, click the CD-R drive, and then click Write these files to CD on the File menu.

Put the cd in your computer cd rom drive. Then open up the cd, select the files you wan to copy, right click on mouse, click on copy
then go to the desired directory on your computer and right click on the mouse and choose paste. All the files you copied will be saved here

As for the second question, there are a lot of programs which let you burn a cd. Go to cnet.com and then click on downloads and search for cd burning software. You will find some free ones. I myself use nero software for which you have to pay and it lets you burn cds and dvds.
If your computer came with a cd drive which could write, you probably have a program already installed on the computer which would let you burn a cd
Hope this helps

If you do not have a CD burning program (such as Nero ot Roxio), then you can do it straight from Windows XP.

On your hard drive create a new folder (say named "transfer")
Put in the original CD
Drag all the files from the CD to the Transfer folder
Remove the CD
Put in a place CD
Drag all the files to the blank Cd
Under the File menu select "Burn". That will write all the files to the CD.
Once done, you can delete the Transfer folder.

Since you have CD burner, you should have either Roxio or Nero, and both of those will allow you to easily make copies of CDs.

They should be in your start menu under Programs.

The alternative is to upgrade to Windows Media Player version 11, and it WILL allow you to burn data CDs. Just click on Burn, and it will give you the audio and data options.

Good luck!

If you have XP, then you can burn data CDs, but not DVD discs. (Vista can burn DVD discs.)

First, copy the files from the CD onto your C: drive (you can make a folder for them first).
If you're just using a blank 700MB CD, then open up File Explorer and select the files. Right click the selected files and click on SendTo. Then, click on the icon for your CD drive. (Click on the balloon to open a window to the files that you are sending to the CD drive.) When you are ready to write, insert the blank CD and wait until the light on the CD drive stops flashing. On the CD drive window, click on the 'File' menu and click 'Write These Files To CD.'
