The only thing you can do is wait until the contractions get closer and longer and stronger. It could have been false labor before. You can help her by keeping her moving (up and walking if she can) to help labor progress and do what she needs to stay comfortable until the time comes to go back to the hospital. My first labor was about 10 hours and my second was 11 not including the 6 hour stall in the middle of it all so the doctor is correct. First labors tend to be longer so hang in there, it will happen in it's own time.

No it's not a bad thing to be in labor for 4 hours...when I was in labor with my first I was in labor for 17 hours!!! They sent me home 2 times (they finally kept me the 3rd). So it's ok, trust the doctor...he does this for a living!

It's fine. Most doctors do that if the mothers hasn't dilate. I was in labor for 15 1/2 hour before I gave birth.

Hun - 4 hours is nothing.
Once it's been 24 hours or longer, then you and the doctors should start to get concerned.
I'm sure everything is going just fine.
I have three kids - my first labor was 13 hours, second was about 10, third was 11-12.
Good luck!

I'm sorry to tell you that 4 hours is nothing especially for 1st time babies. The best thing you can do is just be there for her, while her contractions progress. Be calm and reassuring. She will know when it's time to go. When she is contracting for a minute long, from start to end, and they are 5 mins apart, for an hour, then you should rest assured you can go back to the hospital. She should still be able to walk but not talk through them.. and she may get irritated, but that's because it hurts ;-)

all you can do is wait, labor usually takes a while because everything has to be ready for the baby to make his or her way through. it sounds like your doctor sent you home because she is not far enough along yet in labor. when she is about three minutes apart head to the hospital. in the mean time, keep yourself calm and she will stay calm. you don't want to put your baby under any unecessary stress. labor and coming to the world are stressful enough for baby.

the only time labor is speedy is with induction.
