I tried to get my records from a clinic where I saw a doctor who is no longer in our country. The clinic was sold to a hosptal in another city. When I called them they said they are not required to hold records that are no longer ongoing.
I guess we should demand copies of all medical records and be responsible for them ourselves. Beware this could happen to you.

The new HIPPA laws require that hospitals have a policy for medical records and how long to retain them. There are a lot of records.

Certain records only need to be kept for 6 years, while others forever.

While not available in paper form, records past a certain 'time frame' are available on 'microfiche (sp?); computerized. These records may take time to access, but they're available.

This availability is something we need and it does contributes to the high cost of health care; but there are so many other things that contribute more.

Physicians must also keep records for 6 years.

That having been said, it's always wise to get a copy of your medical records, especially if you move, so your new doctor doesn't need to 'reinvent the wheel' or if you have chronic illnesses.

Get your own copies - they'll throw them away.
All you are to a doctor is another payment on that giant house they built, their jag, or their wife's jewelry.
They don't care about you as soon as you are out of their office.
I just afraid that's the truth. I know they care, but they don't have the energy for concern about every patient they see.
