I do hope so.
We get this sort of question on the Religion and Spirituality page all the time. I'd be thankful if a few of you could help clear up this young ladies misconceptions.
Her Question:
How can folks who adhere to Evolution or the *Big Bang* Theory?
Explain why we have 2 sexes?
Why didn't evolution create one species?
How can you dis-count the fact that GOD creator of heaven and Earth knew that it was going to take a male and female and the way he designed them, to pro-create the planet with human beings and animals of every species.
What is evolutions answer?

bflute 13,
not my question. I find it a particularly foolish question. I was asking if you might go to the linkedquestion and post your answer there.

Uhm...DianA, I was asking if you might lend your efforts to correcting a misguided person on R&S, not challanging the valitidy of the scientific method. Rather fond of it myself.
So, you see there are elemental differances in my question and that of the young lady. Thank you for asking.

Hello,
It's a pleasure to possibly answer some questions that are skeptical of Scientific Theory. I think that any rational person has to adequately weigh those premises that they are most drawn too. Keeping an open mind is crucial.
Back to your question, some experts consider evolution to be a physical process, much like gravity, that shows how small changes from adaptating to the environment culminate into larger changes. Darwin made his observations about evolution simply looking at the different beaks and color of feathers of birds on a particular island. He, however, never questioned why two predominate sexes had evolved. One observation is that not all animals have evolved into two sexes. Some reptiles and seacreatures are only female and are asexual. Bacteria can reproduce through sexual or asexual reproduction. Most "higher" organisms though are thought to be more complex (more genes), and thus having two different sexes allows for more diversity in a particular species.
The crucial point about evolution is that diversity exists because environments change. Being able to adapt to these changing environments is the only way to survive. So surviving a changing environment is why two sexes have evovled. Who knows maybe in the future there will be a third sex to evolve as well. The main point is that staying healthy (through biological and genetic diversity) and surviving a changing environment are the key propositions to evolution.
So remember that...
Thanks for the question,
Hope this helps...

As for the evolution of the two sexes, I recommend Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation;
http://www.drtatiana.com/
best set reading ever! It's about the evolution of mating tactics in different species but also explains the evolution of sexes, a very interesting read.
I'm not going to go to much into this though, I've had that discussion far too often....

I agree with grant's explanation for the two sexes.
why do you think that evolution *should* create only one species? I don't think there's any doubt that humans are the dominant species on the earth, and we certainly could eliminate some species if we wanted to (in fact we have done so already), but we don't want to eliminate all other species, if for no other reason than that we rely on many varieties of plants and animals for food. plants also produce oxygen, which I find to be pretty useful.
there are also a bunch of species that we would consider to be annoying (rats, cockroaches, viruses) that survive within environments created by humans, despite any of our attempts to eliminate them. viruses and bacteria are a good example of evolution at work, since they evolve rather quickly in comparison to larger organisms. in fact, one of the concerns about the overprescription of antibiotics is that the number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is increasing. the fittest bacteria are surviving, and one day they might kill us all.

By defination evolution creates more than one species, as things evolve they morph into other beings. Having two sexes allows evolution to occurs more rapid than asexaul reproduction where everything is a clone. If everything is a clone then one problem and everything of that species dies.
Yes God did create the heavens and the Earth, but how long is a day before He created they earth and sun? A billion-billion years?

Did it ever occur to you that God was/is the driving force behind evolution? If that is the case, which I most definitely believe, then it is easy to see why there are two sexes: God intended for 2 sexes to evolve.
From a strictly scientific view: Reproduction is every organisms highest goal. Evolution had to account for this somehow so higher organisms have the chromosome variability to produce 2 separates sexes.
If one has faith, God and Science are not enemies, they are one and the same.

Okay, sure, I'll defend SCIENCE.
GOD allowed the changes to occur that were brought on by evolution.
Who says Adam and Eve looked just like US????
