I don't wash the dishes, so this is probably a stupid question but, I opened the dishwasher while it was on, and all that came out was steam. Do dishwashers use steam to clean?

*I know i'm not going to get many answers, but i'm just curious

it sprays water all over the dishes and when you open it the water quits spraying and usually the water is hot, so that's why there's steam. dishwashers are supposed to be used to sterilize dishes, but not wash them, so at least rinse them off before putting them in the dishwasher, or else it will spray food all over the dishes ur trying to get clean.

Mine washes twice on the heavy setting, I can put soap in for both or just let the first cycle rinse. It drains between each cycle. Then it rinses 3 times. Then I can have it air dry or heat dry. Heat dry will produce steam. Water stays in the bottom of the washer and is sprayed through jets and arms. If all you got was steam, you probably opened it during dry cycle or just after it emptied. If you are really interested, next time you are at the mall, go to Sears. They usually have a glass door on a dishwasher so you can see what is going on inside. Different dishwashers do it slightly different but it's all on the same thing.

Dishwashers normally shut off if the door is opened. If not, you would have had water flying all over. The arms you see when you look inside have holes that spray water over the surface of the dishes. These spin and clean by pressure and the soap you use. Water temps vary but are usually around 130 degrees, thats why you saw steam.
