Forget about the processor speed, maximise your memory to at least 1gb and you will notice a massive difference in the speed of your computer.
Your computer is probably running slow because of the amout of stuff you have on it so maximising the memory helps in abundance.

I strongly suggest NOT going into your BIOS, as making changes there is only for advanced users.

I agree with the suggestion of adding more RAM, as it will give you the biggest bang for your buck. You can post a comment to your question telling us what system model you have (i.e. Dell Dimension 9200), and we can tell you what kind of RAM you need.

OR just go to www.memoryx.net, and they have a list of computers and they will tell you what you need (and sell it to you of course :). I've been using them for some time and I like them quite a bit.

The best way to get a faster processor is to find out what you motherboard supports, buy the fastest and install it, but you will probably need a tech to do that for you. Not doing it correctly can completely ruin your computer, because an incorrect install can make it overheat. You may want to buy a new computer if RAM isn't what you want (although it probably is).

Well its not the processor you want to worry about as the only way (without buying a new one) is to force it to go faster which makes its life shorted and can make it overheat.
First 256MB RAM is un acceptable! 512MB is the bare minimum that comes from most computer stores and you want to cut down on some things you dont need upon start up.
go to start>run>msconfig and go to start up and un-tick the un-needed ones.

CCleaner is basically a dedicated cleaner which cleans the unwanted files in your computer...for eg. when you download or open any file or site, at many places it is registered in your computer that is not needed by the computer to work.....its a wonderful software that frees unwanted space...
Norton is basically a dedicated anti-virus.....
I sugess to still install CCleaner

You can find a free download of ccleaner here http://bit.ly/1sJimp9

You can overclock your CPU as mentioned above and/or add more memory, but the memory will only speed up your PC as much as the CPU permits. I would save for a faster CPU and more memory if upgrading to a new PC isn't in your budget right now.

Get more RAM, that will help out I'm sure. There is no way to safely speed up your processor...you can overclock it, but if you don't know what you are doing, you can ruin it.
