My front lawn is green, however, my backyard lawn has a good deal of brown on it still. My neighbors lawns are currently all green. Last year we had a small portion that was brown so I raked up the dead grass and threw down some grass seed and it was fine a few weeks later.

This year though, I would say like 50% is still brown, I have fertilized and put lime when I was suppose to. Not sure if perhaps I put too much lime and cause damage?
Appreciate any feedback.

Need more info. What type of lawn? My bermuda just recently greened up. Do you irrigate or should you be?

Did you discover why your lawn was brown? Was it disease, insects, or something else? You need to solve the problem.

How about winter watering? New grass is very vulnerable to winter dehydration.

Yes, too much lime can be a problem. Why did you add lime? Normally I recommend waiting to fertilize until the lawn is green........nitrogen is like pushing the accelerator pedal......great if the lawn is greening up properly, but bad if it is dieing-perhaps from disease.

You need to take samples to your county agent (Cooperative Extension Service...in the blue pages of the phone book...or do a Google search: ([your state] Cooperative Extension Service) Samples should be fresh and include the whole grass plant from roots to crown to blades and taken taken from where the dead and green meet --so if it is a disease then it may be apparent on the samaple). Also dig around the soil (once again on the edges and in the green grass) looking for soil grubs).

Grass problems are hard to diagnose in person, a tad tougher here.

Water it every single day. My neighbour's grass goes brown every year as soon as he stops watering it. But last week he started to water again using his irrigation system. It turns on every day at night and his grass turned green in a matter of days.

you can't hurt a lawn by putting too much lime down... at least not where i live... too much fertilizer would kill the grass though....
