Then Californians = Russians?

2007-05-11 04:43:58 · 11 answers · asked by Anonymous in Science & Mathematics Geography

How would/could U.S. reclaim it?

1) There have been some theories that California could one day break off as an island from a big Earthquake.
2) It could arguably belong to Russia if it floats there (tho unlikely) since it's in Russian territory.

For the sake of the argument, let's say California DID float. Besides, we won't know 100% sure that it wouldn't until it actually happened. Scientists have been wrong and surprised before.

I think your terminology confused Grant D. California will not "float" away from North America. Plate tectonics might cause much of it to break off the continent along the San Andreas fault. But when and if that happens, it will migrate towards southeastern Alaska, not Russia.

I was taught that part of California is a shelf with water underneath it and it will break off some day, but it wont float away, it will sink. This will cause a tsunami to hit Hawaii, obliterating it. This is why I don't want to move back to Hawaii where my husband is from... lol

How does a state break off of a continent when the borders are based on line geometery. Land is not floating on water waiting to break away and float off. But, if it did it would be Russian.

I will assume that this really happened, even though other factors like rising technology would probably deem it impossible.

IF this happens, they will go to the United Nations for help.

No; it will float up to Alaska some day, and they will be Alaskans.

just because it's not attached to the us doesn't mean it doesn't belong to us. look at Hawaii that's an island and it belongs to us.

They couldn't afford it. They'd probably tow it back.
