I feel betrayed by the party. I voted for them (my first time voting) in 2000 because I thought Repubs supported less federal gov't and less gov't interferance in our lives. Instead with things like the Patriot Act and huge inreases in gov't spending I am disillusioned with the party.
Aside from religion, are there any ways that they are still conservative?

Bush altered the Republican party platform to remove any references to a limited federal government. By analysis of his funding policies, he's most similar historically to Lyndon B. Johnson. Not many people realize, but this country has taken a fairly sharp turn to the left in the last few years, at least in terms of government spending and the debates over spending.

Otherwise yes, they are only conservative in religious and socially restrictive terms. I think I will be voting Libertarian again next time.

Actually neither the president or the republicans make it as conservatives in my book. They are not even as conservative as I am on religion.....
