Have you considered making friends in person?
Both online and in person, decide what you're interested in, or what you'd like to find out more about, and look for groups of people involved in that topic already. There are Yahoo groups on just about everything!

I've had luck with Yahoo! Groups, and you also have the option of meeting up with the people in person! This also eases the awkwardness because you already know that you have a common interest! Craigslist is also a good place to post an ad to find a virtual pen pal.
