When there is no more poverty, anxiety, fear of death, unequal distribution to wealth, sickness, instability and despair. People seek a higher being to have some hope beyond the human condition. And the powers that be are happy to have a God to explain these horrors.
The poorest and most desperate people of the world are those "grinning themseves to death" before a guy in a pointy hat bedecked with gold as we speak. (while he tells them to keep making babies and expose themselves to disease).

To my knowledge,a religion never becomes an official myth, every religion that is recorded, still has followers that believe it to be true. You should know, one does not need a temple to be a devotee.

All religions are based at least partly and in some cases mostly on myth. Most of the major ones have some historical basis but even that is subject to interpretation

When a larger, more aggressive religion with violent intent says its a myth and does its best to destroy all its holy books, temples, and true believers. Something like what Christianity did and Islam is trying to do.

A myth is an articulation of a given truth in the form of metaphor and narrative. In this respect, religion does not become "myth" it is always mythic in some respect-- as is the rest of human experience.

A very good question.

I would think its when no one follows that religion anymore. Also, as you point out, when artifacts and chracters from that religion are not revered or respected in that context.

EG Looking at some of the Greek Gods / characters. When someone says MEDUSA, I automatically think of the 1981 film Clash of the Titans.

The moment religion stops accepting money to promote itself. Money to pay it's leadership, priesthood, church building maintenance or maintain some kind of organization structure. I guess religion has to literally die before it becomes 'myth'.

a religion officially becomes a myth is when the religion is no more in effect or when the last person who believes in it dies

Some people would phrase the question, "When does myth become religion?"

time is not involved.it is a myth from the start unless some one can produce without doubt logical proof of an existence of a god.myths are all they are untill proven beyond logical doubt they actually exist.
