My mom has a hardwood chair that has coushins on it... the chair frame is nice but the coushins are well less then attractive and I offered to make new covers for them in a basic seam... now she says that she wants them to have piping on the seams (my apologies if I spelled that wrong) I was wonder if that would be impossible for an amateur to attempt and what exactly is involved with piping and if its too heavy duty for a basic sewing machiene sice she wants it in denim... ( I have broken a few needles with denim before) any help and advise would be greatly appreciated...

You have to use a heavy duty needle for denim. Also, if the machine is worn out or not very powerful, it won't do denim.

Piping is not hard for an intermediate sewer. Just make a narrow tube with a lip on it and thread some piping cord through it. When you put your cushion pieces together to sew, have the piping inside with the lip in your seam allowance. Here are some instructions. http://www.alternative-windows.com/binding.htm

don't you have spell check?
piping can be done s l o w l y. They have an attachment for denim going OVER a seam so you don't break a needle. So the cushions are separate and you are covering a pillow seat or is it something you pull up and tuck and re-install on the chair seat. Denim piping is going to be mighty thick. You can make the piping by purchasing cord and material and wrap the material around the piping and loosely stitching as close to the piping as possible. then place piping between top and bottom of seat right sides together. if this is going to have "sides" you get the drift. what a task you have taken on. This should be a Mother's Days gift to cover a decade of gift giving.

Piping isn't that hard...buy ready made stuff. Use lots of pins and take your time...you can do it! It must be pinned in between the fabric and you have to sew the fabric inside out, so just think about it before you sew it. If unsure, hand-sew it first, then go over the seams with your machine. Get a heavy-duty needle for your machine too! Hope this helps.

Well... nothing is ever "impossible"... But they do make a packaged piping that might make it easier for you. I've broken a few needles on denim as well... Sorry but I don't have any suggestions there other than to take your time... I find that my needles break easier when I'm trying to rush.
