the correct syntax is "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the "x"'s are numbers corresponding with the website's IP address (ex: ping 255.255.255.255)

You might not be able to ping the website, because either they have blocked icmp traffic which is the ping from gaining access to their networks, or you might be typing the command incorrectly.
try this
ping yahoo.com
ping msn.com
If this doesnt work, then you might have some DNS problems which cannot translate yahoo.com to its IP address. You do not have to know the IP address of the website, you just need to make sure you can ping one of the sites above. If that works and you still cant ping that site, then you might be having DNS errors finding that site.

At the command prompt its
ping yahoo.com
or whatever domain you want to ping..
However, some firewalls block that so you may have to disable your firewall to get a response.

Ya, that's it. Some websites have ping diabled. Your firewall may have pings blocked. It happens.

It's probably because they blocked all that at school. Do you really want to get in trouble by fooling with school's computers? Can't you wait till you get home to go on those sites? I know I'll not get 10 points for this answer, but would you believe me when I say that nobody cares about those silly points?..

Lots of sites have ping (and other things that give away details about them) disabled.
Try another type of search. http://www.dnsstuff.com/
