I think it's because many people like a success story, one of people who come from nowhere and work hard to be successful.
It is an interesting cultural study that reflects values and characteristics of individuals who believe in themselves and apply themselves in order to succeed.

I don't know how it happens, but it is very sad that in today's society more people will know who was voted off the show last night, than what's going on in the world.
I have never seen a single american idol show.

I believe because we all have a dream. Not to mention many have a dream to be famous even when they do not have talent. Some because the beginning does not make their own dream seem so foolish when they see others looking foolish.
