Gary K: it is definitely wise to get there at least one hour before the scheduled departure time. A little earlier than that can't hurt either, especially if you have something to read. Unfortunately if you start off a little late it can make you nervous and it's far easier to screw things up or get lost or confused if you are feeling rushed. I would agree with someone else's answer that suggests that you refrain from any sort of joking while at the airport because the security people can be a little bit over reactive. Once you've gone through everything as regards security and boarding the flight itself is fairly easy. Just remember that it's easy to forget some things at the metal detectors such as cell phone, a Leatherman pocket tool if you are an habit of carrying one, belt buckle, keys, any large ornate pen you might be in the habit of carrying.,. For the flight itself typically the most uncomfortable thing is ear pressure. Ear pressure occurs because the air pressure inside the aircraft changes with altitude and there is a pocket of air in your middle ear which needs to the equal to the pressure of the air inside the aircraft otherwise there will be a force present on your eardrum which can be rather uncomfortable. This happens both while ascending (when the pressure is attempting to make your eardrum bulge outward), as well as while descending (when the pressure is attempting to make your eardrum retracted inward.) There is a yube/canal that goes from your middle ear to the back of your throat called the eustachian tube. Unfortunately the eustachian tube doesn't state 100 percent open all the time. Swallowing can often help this tube to pop open temporarily. As a result chewing gum, swallowing, yawning can help to clear the sensation if it occurs to you. Usually you know when it has worked because you hear a squeak noise as the pressure equalizes.. As regards the advice from "Sweet"; don't bother bringing a life preserver because if you did security would be suspicious and you end up with a fist inside some body cavity where you probably don't want it. Not to mention, if you're aircraft were to experience a "water landing" (crashing into the ocean) your life preserver would not do anything for what small chunks of you remained. In addition you would not want to take Valium, and alcohol at the same time. From what I have seen of people traveling by air for the first time their clarity of thought is far more important in decreasing their nervousness and any form of sedation such as medications or alcohol would be. Medications or alcohol are more likely to make you less inhibited and then if you truly do get nervous you might start making noise and causing trouble that you normally wouldn't. As far as grabbing the armrests and praying to God. You don't really need to grab the armrests as the principal force on takeoff is one of acceleration, and your body is pushed gently back into the seat. It's quite uncommon to have significant turbulence on takeoff run.

Probably Hawaii or Alaska, because I live in Utah, have been to California, and Las Vegas, and I'm not a big fan of big crowds in New York, but I wouldn't mind going there, and Florida would be fine too.

I lived in Alaska and loved it so I would go back there. I loathe cities and I most especially would go to Africa, which I also love.

I was thinking more like Italy or someplace in Europe, but if I had to go with the U.S., I would say Alaska.
