depends on what kind of rock you're looking for. it's such a general word.
Check out some of your local bands! Do a search on myspace or something.
some of my favorite bands: Always And Forever. And Then There Were None (they're A LOT like As I Lay Dying). Shot Down Sun. Sluts. Neon Hookers. Blood And Batteries (industrial rock band in FL).
as for larger, but still not well known bands... The Number 12 Looks Like You. Fear Before THe March Of Flames. Emmure. The Red Chord. Black My Heart (NOT an emo band, trust me.)
Those are all very different bands. If you decide to check any of them out, let me know and I can give you a list of bands that are like them.

There are many, many great bands that you'll never hear on commercial stations. Tune in to www.kdnk.org for some great new music (as well as your favorites from years past).
Some of my favorite new releases in the last few years have come from:
- 56 Hope Road
- West Indian Girl
- Bittersweet
- Kinky
- Liquid Soul
- Tommy Guererro
- Dirty Vegas
Those should be a good start. Let me know what you think of them.

i've become rather apprehensive of good non mainstream rock bands because nowadays, mtv seems to have a way of picking up all those good underground bands and turn introduce them to commercial success. hah, you can't keep your fave band a secret for long nowadays. alot of the bands listed above are pretty mainstream.

Midlake. I just started listening to this band about a year ago. I think they released their first album in '04. They're new album is the Trials of Van Occupanther. Here's a myspace link to check them out.

OK first the muse is popular, All the list that had Alexisonfire (which i do like Alexisonfire) they are all popular. Your best bet would be to search around your local towns and cities. I mean their are a lot of awesome local bands that blow me away when i hear them. One for example that is amazing is MyChildren MyBride.
