Pretty much all schools, private or otherwise, have to wear uniforms in the UK. It's meant to make people look neater, and if they cause trouble on the way home from school then people can identify what school they go to and report them.
It's also meant to stop bullying over what people wear, but everyone knows who the poor kids are anyways.

In my son's public elementary school it is supposed to be for a sense of school spirit ,"status", easier on kids because they don't have to decide what to wear, to improve academics, and reduce violence.
This is a REAL pet peeve of mine for many reasons:
1.) Constitutional freedom taken away.
2.) Uniforms don't make them look more "statuesque", but more like little Nazi's.
3.) We as parents pick out and buy the clothes for our kids that we/they like. My child isn't brain dead - it's not that hard to pick out what he's going to wear.
4.) If the school violence is that bad (which is zero) why would I want my child to go there?
5.) Double standard - this really gets me - the students have to wear uniforms but not the staff!!! In my opinion, if the kids have to wear them, so should the teachers, administration, etc.
6.) There have been scientific studies proving no change/improvement in students academics, behavior, etc. just for wearing uniforms.
Sorry - I could go on and on about this.

Not all schools wear uniforms...public schools that require it usually do so in order to prevent gangs, crime, possiblity to bring weapons to school, social classes being made fun of, etc. Some private schools require it for the same reasons. I know that the private school I used to work at required khaki pants or skirts and polo or button down shirts (collared). The reason behind it was so that men and women could learn how to dress in somewhat professional clothing and act appropriate while wearing them...preparing them for when they would have to dress that way in the real world.

To make everyone look the same.
Otherwise you may get some kids wearing trendy expensive clothes and others with less money who don't and it could lead to bullying

excuse me, schools don't wear them, students do. it's to cut down on distractions, whether that shows as teasing or jealousy or violence.
