Policy varies depending on hotel, hotel chain, city, neighbourhood and time of day. But I find more and more currently have a lock down policy.

Many you can only get into the lobby, and the elevator and stairs can only be accessed if you have a room key. So you have to contact your friend to come get you, or to have your friend allow the front desk to give you a key that will work for the elevator.

Other places you can walk right in and wonder the halls during the day. But by 10 PM or midnight you have to check with the front desk. They sometimes lock the front door, and if you don't have a key you are dealing with the night desk to get where you are going.

Depends on the hotel. Some hotels request that you announce yourself at the front desk and your friend must come down and greet you. In some places you cannot even take the elevator without having a valid room pass.

Others are more relaxed and you could go up and simply knock on their room door. In those hotels, this is one of the reasons why it is important to lock your door and check the door peephole before opening it.

Security is usually pretty good in the hotels in Montreal. Still, it is important to take precautions when travelling in any foreign city.
