First of all definitely the fact that he did not only create a whole world but also a whole language that can actually be learned and spoken. My all time favorite part of the book is when he first describe the forest with the elves living in the trees, that is something my imagination grabbed onto so tight that even the movies could not come near.

It is amazing how Tolkien made up all the different cultures. The hobits, a total new creature, that no one has ever used in a book before! It wonder full.

I like Arwen in the movie, she does not play that big role in the book, most detail is only given in the appendix but the way they did it in the movie really touch my heart

In the books, I liked the fact that
1. a whole new world named the middle earth was created completely with a unique history which was different from the ordinary world
2.unique languages for elves and other mythical creatures were developed by the author himself for the sake of the book.
3.Tolkien had led the story of the usual good Vs bad in 1000 or so odd pages without inducing boredom in the readers.
I was impressed with the movies because Peter Jackson had directed the film on almost the same lines as that of the original version of the book ,unlike the other 'Novel based' films which usually tend to deviate more from the original story line.

The Movies: actually did a pretty good job staying close to the book.

The Books: Immense amount of detail, the complexity of his world and the historical & social commentary. Tolkien was teaching us something without beating us over the head with it. He told a wonderful tale of adventure while weaving in history and life lessons (ie self sacrifice for the greater good, loyalty, etc)

the richness and grandeur - the mythology - the cultures

so much stuff!

I'm a big fan of the book and have read it 30 or so times ...

The story is just an immense epic set in what amounts to a complete land with history, heroes, villains

it's interesting - such a small trifling token item (the Ring) with such great power - the whole addictiveness of it ... that everyone who sees it wants it etc

makes for an intricate web of a story

The goodness and loyalty of Smawise Gamgee. Even thought he was tempted by the ring, too, he stuck by Frodo to the end.
