One of my friends is deaf, and thus he wouldn't enjoy a cell phone too much. But... he would love texting.

It doesn't make much since to me for him to spend like $40 or $50 a month on a talking plan just so he can get $10 worth in text messages.

Does anynody know of a phone plan that would allow him to only buy texts instead of a talking plan?

What Cioni said. T-Mobile offers the Data Plan which is $29.99 a month for unlimited data (internet), emails and texting. If someone should try to call you while you have the Data Plan, well for me since I use the Sidekick 3, I get a message that asks me if I want to ignore the call or accept it, and I always ignore it every time. It's pretty nice. I'm deaf myself and have had the Sidekick 3 with the Data plan since late February and I am really happy with it.

And I have heard that Verizon offers a plan for their deaf customers and that costs about $40 a month.

I pay $30 a month to Tmobile with a sidekick data-only plan. It is unlimited texts, IMs and internet access. Check out tmobile. I'm sure most of the other carriers would have similar plans for their phones.

The larger cell phone companies - Verizon, Nextel, Sprint, etc - tend to have special discounts they'll give for different groups. Some give corporate discounts, some give long-term customers special prices, etc.

The thing to do is to take your request directly to the cell phone company. Speak to a customer service rep and explain your idea. They may step up to the plate and see it as a great public relations idea.

I don't think they'll be able to program a phone to be 'text only' without modifying the phone itself, so they may make you sign off on a statement saying you'd lose the special price if the phone is used for voice calls.

Interesting idea. Let us know what the phone company says.

I actually have a pass telephone that have been given for $25. Then in elementary terms pay 25 cents a minute for texting or calling. i will get my digital mail too. it is suitable for me because of the fact i do no longer stay to tell the story it and don't ought to deal with settlement expenses.

Depends on the phone company that you choose. My bf is hard of hearing so i text alot (all the time). and I have a contract with US Cellular and i get unlimited texting for an extra $5.00 a month. So look at your options with different celluar companies and choose the one that is best for you.
