Ive been trying for about an hour to find help and no one understands me. I'll try one more time and if this is not specific i don't know what is. I bought this computer for my nine year old, i rarely use it ,im not a computer geek just basics. I was e-mailed a document for me to sign and return but my printer died on me and i do not posses a scanner or fax machine or any thing else. Now this is my question again! Is there any way for me to sign or type my name on this document thru the computer, i have tried clicking on the signature line of the document but nothing happens. The document is in pdf format does this have anything to do in me not being able to sign it or what? Can you hear me now?

The correct way is to use a digital signature. You have to purchase a security cetificate first. Once you have one, a PDF can be signed by selecting Document - Digital Signatures - Validate Signature, from the Acrobat tool bar. This is only possible if the creator of the pdf allowed signing. This can be checked by going to the File menu and then choosing Document Properties and clicking the Secuirty tab. You do not need the full version of Acrobat to sign a document, the standard viewer is enough.

This website gives full instructions for getting started with digital signatures: http://www.planetpdf.com/enterprise/article.asp?ContentID=6396

Alternatively, ask if the document can be sent to you in Word format. You can then use Word's Handwriting tool which is accessible from the Speech Toolbar.

If that fails, go old skool, print the sucker out, sign it, scan it back in, and email.

"Is there any way for me to sign or type my name on this document thru the computer, i have tried clicking on the signature line of the document but nothing happens."

The default nature of PDF documents is to lock the document so that it can't be edited so that formatting is maintained. Unless the creator of the document enabled input fields on the document (which by your past couple of post, it wasn't) you can only print the document or try to copy and paste into another program where you have the ability to add text/signature.

The solutions provided by the responders here may not be what you want to hear but they are generally accurate. In the case of 99.9% (OK, maybe just a majority but it is definitely a high percentage) of PDF documents, you can pretty much only view/print them. PDF is great for preserving document format but is a pain if you need to allow edits like you are asking to do.

There are several different formats of PDF files. Some allow you to type in, others do not. As this one is not letting you, I would guess it is a "not" format. It is essential a "picture" of the document, not a "word processor" or "text" document.

One of the features of PDF files is that you CAN'T change them (such as adding a signature). These keeps people from being able to edit information on them, etc.

So there is no easy way to "sign" a PDF file if it was not set up to allow that (most are not).

You could bring the document up on your screen, do a Print Screen, paste it into a photo program (Photoshop, Paintshop, etc), crop it as needed, and then paste your signature into the picture, save it and e-mail it back. But whether the sender would expect that is nothing issue. Anyone could paste your signature into the picture, so it might not be considered a "legal" signature. (You did not say what kind of document it is).

Yes, with pdf documents, I believe only if you have the full program, you will be able to type and save on the pdf that was sent to you. If you just have the reader (which most people do), you can type on the document, but not save it.

I suggest either going to a library, checking your mail and printing it there OR go to a copy center, like Kinkos, and you will probably be able to check your mail there and print the file. Additionally, once you've done that, they usually also have access to scanners and fax machines for you to send the document back to the sender. Good luck.

The answers we were giving you in your previous post are your only options unless you want to go out and spend large amounts of money on the Adobe Acrobat software package that will allow you to edit pdf's that are sent to you.

No, you can't click on the signature line and sign it. That's the nature of a pdf. You can't change them. There are some small programs that will allow you to create new fields on a pdf but, you'll have to pay for those as well.

As we said before, print out the form (you can probably do it at the library), sign it in ink, then take it to a Kinko's, OfficeMax, Staples, etc. and fax it back to them.

Try this. Copy and paste the document into the body of an email. Send it to yourself. Once received, open it, and then hit "forward". When the text, (which now should have the document) appears, go in and sign the document, using a different font, one that appears to be in signature style. There are many italics to choose from. Once signed, forward it to the intended recipient, and to yourself. If you can't cut and paste in pdf mode, convert the pdf to a word document, or any that will allow a copy and paste. I hope this works.

No. By your description of the problems, you cannot do it electronically without the installation of a paid product.

However if you have a local friend nearby that has a printer, forward the email and attachment to him/her and ask them to print it for you. Then you can sign the document and go to a local store to fax it back or if your friend has a scanner, scan the document and email it back.

The pdf file that you are working with must not have "permissions" attached. So to be able to work with this file you would need to open it in "Adobe Acrobat" not "Adobe Acrobat Reader". When the file is open in Acrobat you would be able to make change such as "Sign It" Therefor you need to locate a machine that has Adobe Acrobat installed.

you can't sign it on a computer. pdf format doesn't have anything to do with it.

Unless you have a highspeed touchscreen like a tablet pc...which you probably don't...no. Best bet would be to go to kinko's...or something like that and get it faxed.
