Well it likely was not as important at the time as we in America like to think. But for anyone paying attention it was an astonishing series of events with an astonishing outcome. For one thing you had the free-est people on the face of the Earth rebelling against the most powerful nation on Earth for yet more freedom. The British at the time understood the concepts of democracy, free enterprise, self determination and the rule of law. But they did not want to apply the same standard to the Americas (for lots of reasons). It was their attempts to apply this double standard that was the root cause of the rebellion. By the time of the revolution most of the population had been born in the Americas and had never set foot in the mother country. The point being there was an unintended consequence of running a world wide empire in age of sailing ships and no instant communication: Independence.

So, the importance to people around the world was in the proof that it was not possible for even the most powerful nation to completely control a situation from thousands of miles away.
