Because they know damn well that unless they put some distance between themselves and dubya (and his failed war) then they don't have a snowballs chance in hell of getting themselves (re)elected.

The answer is in your source, CNN is one of the most liberal media outlet out there and will say anything to tear down Bush. Even if it cannot be proven. I think a lot of people are unhappy with some things, but given the circumstances I am so glad we had Bush in there instead of Kerry. Thank God.

It's because, in the final analysis, they have realized who the real Deciders are, and they aren't George W. Bush and Company, whose supreme arrogance and defiance of the will of the people is taking its toll on his administration and anyone who allies themselves with it. This president and his administration will go down in U.S. history as probably the most arrogant, the most corrupt, the most secretive, the most dictatorial and the least competent ever. But then, that's just who George is. Now he is having to pay the piper. And it couldn't have happened to a more deserving fellow.

More than their love of the country and more than their hatred of terrorism, representatives want to stay in office. They will do anything to stay in office and distancing themselves from President Bush may help republicans do that in 2008. I doubt you'll see the President doing many campaign appearances next year. No one wants to be associated with a President who has a 28% approval rating.

Because the Republican party was always known for their stance being small government.
Bush though has been for huge government that is invasive into everyone's life.
Also I think some republicans are upset with his "I am the President and no one counts" attitude he takes toward Congress and the rest of country.

Many people are having trouble reconciling Bush's message that he is a Christian Compassionate Conservative, with his Triumphalist King Making policies employed in the War in Iraq. Many fundalmentalist Christian organizations feel cheated because they feel they were courted for their votes only to be left out in the cold when policy and decision making time came around. Many others feel cheated that they were sold on a small fiscally conservative Government, and what they got was a National debt that our Grandchildren's children are going to have trouble paying off. I say you get what you vote for, but then I didn't vote for him. Maybe all those electronic voting machines with no paper trails elected him?

They need to be careful, this is the reason Gore did not win in 2000. All he needed was one more state, and he lost Arkansas by separating himself from Clinton. I guess his strategist told him he should since Clinton's popularity was decreasing, but I think he lost more people than he gained and ultimately this is why W got elected the first time.

Born again thinkers or they've put their fingers in the air and noticed which direction the political winds are blowing - against the War in Iraq and against everyone supporting its continuation.

Because their jobs are on the line.
Mind you that it is only a handful right now.
The American people are unwilling to keep dumping money into Iraq with poor results.

Same reason Dems distanced themselves from Clinton at the end of his second term...he's been deemed a liability to their future political careers.
