The past few days my grand cherokee is overheating when my car is idle. I started my car today and the check engine light was on. Are these two things related? Also, my a/c is not blowing cold air. Could all three of these things be caused by the same thing? What could be going on here? Thanks.

Also, I do know that I need to get it checked out asap, but I also needed to get to work this morning.

More than likely you have cooling fan troubles. There should be at least one electric fan for the radiator/condensor, the other could either be electric, or engine driven.

The reason it overheats at idle only is that as you are moving, air is being pushed across the radiator and cooling it. While at idle, with the fan(s) not running, there is NO air flow to cool the radiator.

Open the hood, watch the fans. If they are not running, you'll have a bad fan, relay, or sensor. Also turn the AC on. The electric fan should always operate when the AC compressor runs.

The check engine light may have been caused by the overheat condition, but may also be indicative of another symptom.

Anytime the check engine light comes on, you need to immediately take that vehicle to the shop. IMMEDIATELY! I also own a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee and when that light comes on, you need to take it the shop. I think it is all related. IMO.

yes al three can cause these problems it could be your thermost is sticking, or your electric fan is not kicking on
you may even have a plugged heater core. Start by cheking you coolant fluid ,is it full ,does it look clean do you have oil in your coolant? How bad did you overheat it?hopefully it isnt a blown head gasket. have a computer diag, test done on you vehicle. have temp sneding unit checked.
