Divide 3117 by the highest power of 8 which will divide into it:

8^4 = 4096, so that's too big.
8³ = 512, and will divide into 3117.

3117 / 8³ = 3117 / 512 = 6 + 45 / 3117

Now, divide the remainder, 45, by the highest power of 8 which will divide into it:

8² = 64 is too big, so try 8^1:

45 / 8^1 = 5 + 5 / 8

Divide the remainder, 5, by the highest power of 8 which will divide into it:

5 / 8^0 = 5 / 1 = 5

Now write down the sum of all the powers of 8 which have divided into the number in descending order.

3117 = 6 x 8³ + 0 x 8² + 5 x 8^1 + 5 x 8^0

3117 = 6055 base 8. This is your answer.

You can use a calculator to do this or convert 3117 to binary and mark off the binary number into 3 bit bytes. Each 3 bit byte will convert directly into an octal digit.

110,001,010,111 binary would equal
6127 octal

EDIT: BTW the same process works when converting from decimal to hexadecimal. Just lay the binary number out in 4 bit bytes.
I taught this stuff while in the Air Force.
