Hi,

I'm trying to find representations for a bar... but a little bit too big, fantastical... lots of tables, levels... and crowded with lots of strange different types of people and creatures mingling.

It should almost be more like a big party than a small bar. Could be decadent costume parties from the 20s or with interesting baroque qualities. Or maybe a sci-fi film where there are loads of different weird characters.

But I need to find wideshots to capture the essence of the size of it all.

Can anyone suggest any films that fit this vibe in any way? All suggestions welcome. Please ask me to elaborate if this doesn't make sense. That's a lot!

Not really.

I could only come up with the rave from "XXX" and the small sequence from "The Matrix". I'm not even certain "Fifthe Element" can help

I'm thinking of the house "party" from Eyes Wide Shut.

First think of the colors. Being that its a bar you'd want something darker and richer. Your safest best would be dark reds. Ands reds would go best with gold and black details.
I would begin with the walls since that would gauge everything else. Wall paper is your best bet. Think of patterned wall paper with perhaps some velvet in it. Here is a sample of what I mean (notice the pattern of women in the design, very cool):

As for stuff to put on the walls fill it with golden mirrors of varying shapes and candle holders and maybe even hang some masquerade style masks as decoration.

The space can be filled with antiquey gothic style furniture (tables and chairs) which you can find at any flea market. Just spray paint it gold or black. Even if the furniture looks like a piece of crap, once its sprayed it'll look cool.

After the wall think of the other details. Put some funky old lamps with beads hanging from the sides. Place some decorations like candelabras here and there, figurines of ladies (pin up style), etc.....

There is this steak house in New York called Strip House, which is where I got the image of that wallpaper. The decorum there is great and what I was suggesting. Its a very high-end place which is what you may want to look for.
Look it up on citysearch.com

Have fun decorating!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has, by far, the weirdest bar setting. It has all sorts of actual "Lounge Lizards."

Also, by the same director, look into Brazil. Another equally surreal restaurant.

Or, the British BBC TV version (not the movie!!) of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You're gonna look for the restaurant at the end of the universe segment.

Cheers!

"The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" (1989).

Look at the Le Hollandais. It's a restaurant, not a bar, but otherwise, it might fill your bill:

*Neon signs, high ceilings, red wall-paper and curtains, with gold trimmings and swags; crystal; oversized potted palms; an enormous reproduction of "The Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Militia" by Frans Hals; and, of course, lots of Jean-Paul Gaultier.

*If you're looking for curiosities and odd "creatures," the "Thief," Albert Spica, and his gang might be exactly what you're looking for. I've attached a page dedicated to the film, so you can explore plot details and, more importantly, pictures.

in the super exterior w/ John candy, there's a scene the place a undergo is of their holiday cabin and he stands up on his returned legs..you will discover the instructor's "stick" directing the undergo to stand up. In no longer ordinary to Kill with Steven Segal, there's a scene @ the tip the place the undesirable guy gets thrown down an elevator shaft. it is SOOOOO obtrusive that it is a dummy. it is easily extremely relatively humorous. In Thrashin', a skateboard action picture from the 80's that starred Josh Brolin, in the main suitable race down the mountain, in some scenes the guy enjoying "Bones" the undesirable guy, is using goofy foot (precise foot forward) and in different scenes he's using usually used (left foot forward). it is all i've got have been given from memory.
