I just bought a brand new 500gb Western Digital Hard Drive for my computer. Well i acedently dropped it, and it hit concrete. It says in it, that warranty is invalid if it exceeds shock in excess of 350gs. The drive seems fine and works, but i am afraid that it could stuff up at any point.

My question, what is 350gs, and how can that be calculated into distance dropped and speed?
Weight= 0.79lb / 360grams
Height dropped = 1.5meters

Can this be worked out?

350 gs is 350 times our standard 1g. So the spec is saying that acceleration of
Amax = 350*9.8 m/s^2 = 343 m/s^2
will void the warrantee. If you could estimate the time period, t, that it took for the drive to come to a stop, then
Vf = Vo + a*t
will give you the acceleration. Vf is final velocity, 0. Vo is original velocity, just before hitting the floor. You can get Vo from conservation of energy.
Potential energy(before drop) = m*g*h = kinetic energy(before hitting) = (1/2)*m*Vo^2

Estimating t accurately is probably impossible. I think you can be 70% sure that if it works now, it survived and is usable. In any case, always backup your data.

I have no idea what unit gs is, I would guess it is some obscure unit of force and well ironically Force is the same no matter how high you drop it from because the only acceration acting on it is gravity and so F=m*a is always the same. But I say why tell the truth, rip off WD, or better yet get the better Seagate HD. Muahahaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
