I've spent a lot of time there on business and some pleasure over the years, and it's actually more diverse politically even within the conservative span of thought.
Most of my opinions of Texas have more to do with the weather, landscape, and culture, and these opinions depend a lot on geography. Dallas is my least favorite part - flat, dull, all flash and no depth. While some people bash both Dallas and Houston together, I find Houston a lot better - it's actually got a hint of academic/intellectual flavor with NASA, the medical community, Rice, and an international population - but it's hotter and more humid than hell 8 months out of 12, and it's SO spread out.
Austin and San Antonio are both good places - I could actually live in New Braunfels or in Austin pretty happily.
I haven't seen the Panhandle or Lubbock or Midland or El Paso. I've driven Route 10 from Carlsbad Caverns (NM), and I'm unusual because I actually like the desert and scrub. I would like to go back to Texas and get way south - from Corpus down to McAllen and up along the border to Big Bend.
One thing is true about Texas and most states that Coasters call "fly-over" states - there's a lot more than TV-generated perceptions would have you believe.

Texas State is in elementary terms a smaller college. Their attractiveness isn't undesirable. I even have been to Lubbock and that's boring. Going to a small college has reward in the long-term. you will ought to pass to grad college so by potential of going to a smaller college your profs can comprehend you larger. you may get extra in contact in study at texas state. in case you will experience happier at texas state pass there.

I lived 3 months (and that was way too long) in the Dallas area. I will never (knock on wood) move back. Corpus Christi was a nice visit, but not worth returning to Texas. As far as I know, they are the only state in the nation that finds it acceptable to wear cowboy boots & hats to a professional business meeting.
To be fair, I'm born and raised (mostly) in the Northwest. Texans have a different mentality. They love their state, good for them, they can have it.
(as you mentioned voting, did anyone ever hear about voting on "America's Team" - how come the Dallas Cowboys got that title?)

I lived in Bastrop for about 2.5-3 yrs, and hated it. Of coarse I was in Jr. High - just starting High School, so I pretty much hated everything.
The High School sucked because they were overcrowded, and didn't want to build a 2nd one, as it would split up the football team. Yay for education!!

The Rio Grande Valley is the only place in America that I'll ever live again. My one true regret is that I ever moved away.
