When listing items, the final comma is optional, given certain guidelines.

Do not omit it if doing so would cause confusion.

Be consistent. In other words, if you omit the comma in one list within an essay, continue to do so throughout. If you leave the comma in one list, do that throughout. Do not mix it up.

AP style (used by journalists) prefers the omission, but most English standards permit either. As an English teacher, I suggest leaving the comma to avoid any potential confusion.

The last comma was dropped some years back. Now you would write, "I ate pizza, salad, steak and potato."

If you are using the last comma.... it goes before the and. But you don't have to use it at all. Either way is acceptable.
