I think you have to work with the hand you are dealt. If you are living in a third world country, you are basically at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy. You are just worrying about air, food, shelter. If you are in a more technologically advanced country and have adequate financial resources, you can get an education, a nice house, a car. If you are blind or paralyzed, you are limited in what you can and cannot do. Remember, we were not all created equally. I was given a good education and told to go to work. so I did. The older I get, the more I re-arrange priorities and goals. I have experimented with religion. I have traveled. I have met lots of people. Climbing the career ladder is no longer a priority for me. My time away from work is more important. My hobbies have changed. It kind of depends on your economic and social status and age in life.

Luck rules our fate. Sometimes, nevertheless, you could plan out your future by setting goals and trying to reach them. The key word is TRY. A lot of times we have to settle for less than we had expected. Mostly because of bad luck, insufficent talent and connections. I prefer the spiritual, to live materialistically is tough given all the compeition for the good things in life. I don't want to spend my days in competition and worrying about if I am winning or losing.
