The address book is a great suggestion as it will give you a lovely insight into the real world of programming.
An ostensibly simple concept that the more you analyze the more complicated it becomes. Then you start adding unnecessary concepts like email or postcode format checkers, with say a regular expression that makes your code base spiral out of control.
After 1 year and any number of client meetings where they demand ever more absurd features you end up with something that's basically a rubbish version of outlook, that once the application is implemented, everyone ignores and just keeps their stuff on outlook anyway.
You will however learn a helluva lot.
