She's right, it's his hearing. His mom was deaf, too, which is where he learned to read lips and how to use sign language.

hearing. his mom had it and it was passed on. and when he finally goes to get it checked they told him that he let it go to long and that he would have to have surgery. but in the end he will lose his hearing permanently.
