She suffered a back injury (a torn ligament, IIRC) and rather than have the show in reruns or with a guest host so near the Nielsen (sp?) sweeps week, she opted to do the show from bed.
IMHO, this was a truly neat 'making-lemonade-from-lemons' solution.

she tore a ligament around her back area which means its hard for her to move so she had to be bedridden.
