yard help?

okay we bought a new house we will be moving in the house next saturday the 19th my yard has hay, weeds i was wondering is there any way rather than trying to take out everything and planting it all over again that i can do??? thanks for all your help i really appreciate it!

New houses often have straw (not hay) on the lawn surface to hold moisture for new grass seed on the soil. If hay was used, you probably have new hay growing since it contains seed. Check under the hay/straw and see if there isn't grass growing. Weeds grow along with the grass.
