Dell Inspiron 1501 or 1505. Great price for a good all round machine.

Get one with Intel's Yonah core (even just a CeleronM) and w/ ATI or Nvidia graphics. Ask for 2x512Mb RAM. You will be amazed at how this cheap specs could perform and even beat desktops w/ single core processors.
