For all of you who say that it doesnt matter about being a black quarterback, youre very wrong. IT DOES! I dont like to play the race card, but it was and sometimes still is played in the NFL when it comes to quarterbacks. There are many guys who ended up being cornerbacks, halfbacks, or wide receivers back in the days who could have been NFL quarterbacks. But it was ASSUMED that they couldn't handle the THINKING involved in the quarterback position because of their race. During the Super Bowl, Tony Dungy stated in one of his interviews that he regretted not taking a stand to play quarterback because he really could play the position. It was a long time before a Black man was considered worthy enough to start at quarterback. The league is majority Black, but only possibly 9 starting QB's out of 32 teams, about 5 Black Head Coaches and 2 Black GM's/VP of Player Personnel come to mind. There has been an assumption that Black players dont think as well as whites and that stereotype exists even now.

They said Vince Young wasn't intelligent because of an alleged Wonderlic Score. Look how critical the media is of Michael Vick (and I'm a Saints fan so I'm naturally supposed to hate him and any member of the Falcons). They expect him to be a pocket QB when he's not. If he doesnt hit 70% of his passes, they accuse him of being a "running back who can throw a little bit". Look how horrible Eli Manning played last year and how the media came up with excuses for him sucking. The media blamed Tony Romo bobbling the snap on a "slippery substance". I was so happy when a few years ago, the NFC Pro Bowl squad had three Black quarterbacks for the first time in history (Culpepper, McNabb, Vick)

I wish it didnt matter the color of a quarterback's skin, but unfortunately it does.

Let's see...Vince Young, Jamarcus Russel, Daunte Culpepper, Donovan McNabb, Tavaris Jackson, Jason Campbell, Michael Vick, Steve McNair, Byron Leftwich. That's all so that's 9.

Not enough. They thought Vince Young wasn't intelligent enough to handle the starting job with Tennessee. There are still hangups with coaches and upper managment in relation to an African-American's ability to start as a QB in the NFL. That is a joke, a travesty. Look at McNabb, at Young, and now Russell with the Raiders will have his chance to shine. It hasn't been determined how many black starters there will be yet. We will have to wait until the season begins to find out. Also, once Culpepper heals look out for him, too.

9. But does it really matter today? I mean, I could go off and ask "How many Hispanic QBs are there?", or "Why aren't there more Hispanics in football."

It. doesn't. matter.

Edit: Who Dat -- I'm Puerto Rican. I know about people assuming things, calling me names, etc. People would take one look at my last name in school, and start talking REAAAAALY slowly, because they thought I couldn't speak English. Or they'd call me names, throw my stuff around, pull my hair, etc. So yes I know about stereotypes, etc. I'm just commenting that although racism and stereotypes still exist, people just need to look at merit, not race. Otherwise, the issue is never laid to rest, and it continues to be a vicious cycle.

Who cares The N.F.L. is the greatest sport out there so stop worrying who is black/white and start watching some hardhitting,tacklebreaking,one-hand grabs in the end-zone of jawdropping FOOTBALL and enjoy it while you can.

mike vick, tarvaris jackson, cleo lemon or daunte culpepper (both black), jamarcus russell, vince young, steve mcnair, byron leftwich or david garrard (both black), donovan mcnabb, jason campbell. so that's 9 teams out of 32.

Jake,

I'm sincerely not starting an argument here but I have a question - what difference does it make? Aren't we Americans always trying to divide ourselves - left/right, con/lib, atheist/christian, black/white? I am white and we BOTH have to try to stop this separation. Our children deserve better than what we have given them in this area - please try to help. On the sports front black QB's (and all other players) have done extremely well in this highly-competitive arena and have a huge amount of followers, black and white. Does this speak of racism? No. I truly wish you well. If my question chafes at you I'm sorry but hopefully you will see what I am trying to do. May God bless you!
