Hi.
I'm working with 2 kids, aged 8 years old and 5 years old. Their parents have asked me to organise games for their outdoor time, but I'm struggling to think of any that only use 2 players ( or 3 including me ). Hide and seek kind of works, but it doesn't take very long, and they'll soon get bored with it.
Anyone got any ideas of non-messy, non-violent games that an 8 year old could play with a 5 year old?

Well, there is what i've always known as "wounded soldier" (though you might want to change the name for the kids) where you throw a ball to each other, and if you drop it you lose a limb - so the first time you drop the ball, you have to stand on one leg, the second time you drop the ball you have to kneel, the third time you drop the ball you have to put one arm behind your back and the fourth time you drop the ball you are out or "dead". That can be played with any number of players, but at least 2.

You could also play "piggy in the middle" with the three of you, one person tries to catch the ball as it is thrown between two people.

Or "Red Light, Green Light" - where one person stands at one end of the space (and is the leader) e.g. your garden, and the other starts at the opposite end. The object of the game is for the other person to get to the leader but only by moving when and how instructed by the leader. The commands are:
GREEN LIGHT - when this is shouted, you can run towards the leader.
YELLOW LIGHT - when this is shouted you must walk towards the leader.
RED LIGHT - when this is shouted you must stand perfectly still.
If the leader sees you run on YELLOW LIGHT or move on RED LIGHT then you have to return to the starting line. Once again this can be played with any number of people, and two is the minimum.

Hope this helps you out

You could play "Snail's Pace":

1. Draw a large spiral (shaped like a snail's shell) on the ground. Make a circle in the center and label it "Home." Divide the rest of the spiral into a dozen spaces.

2. To start, the first player must hop on one foot, landing in each space, all the way to the Home circle, where she can land on both feet before turning and hopping back out. If she completes the feat without stepping on a line, she can write her initials in the space of her choice. No other player can land there for the rest of the game.

3. The next person in line follows suit, skipping over the initialed space. If she succeeds, she earns a square. Play continues in this manner until no one is able to reach Home. Whoever has earned the most spaces wins

The only idea I can come up with is set up a scavenger hunt with simple riddles leading them to each spot and something small to collect. If you spread it apart right and have enough, you can keep them busy at least a little while
