Laptop - get professional help as they are usually soldered to the system board and you have to change the whole board.

Desktop: Check the size and wattage of your current supply to be sure you get a new one that will fit the case and be powerful enough. Depending on the model, you may have to remain scres holding it in place. Disconnect the cable(s) to the system board. Disconnect the cables to the various drives. Remove the power supply. Insert (and screw in) the new one. Reconnect all cables.

If you are careful about the cables, it is relatively simple. Can usually be done in under 30 minutes.

Follow dewcoons advice. Don't forget to ground yourself properly (at the least, touch the metal casing of the computer before touching anything inside and don't shuffle around on carpet). There's some good illustrated guides on the web, but your new power supply should come with instructions. It's really quite simple - disconnect, unscrew, replace, connect. You can't really mess it up too easily, as you can't connect things 'wrong'.
