It depends on what kind of things you mean. If you mean rocks then wash them well and check them for safety first. Check them by soaking them overnight in a small bowl of water. If you see any film on the surface or any discoloration of the water, discard that stone. After that, pour a few drops of vinegar on the rock and see if it bubbles or fizzes at all. If so discard that one.
I wouldn't recommend you use any type of plant matter dead or alive in your tank that is from a garden or other terrestial source.
Small grubs, worms or larvae are safe as a food source if no pesticides have been used recently and as long as you wash away the soil.

I just want to add a comment to others answers - in addition to checking rocks by putting them in water for a while, you might want to test the pH of the water before deciding to use them. Depending on where you live, some rock may leach chemicals into the water that will either raise or lower the pH. Ones you buy are non-reactive when put in water (ther than those for cichlid/saltwater use). The vinegar thest will work for carbonates only - iron, sulfides, and phosphates can't be detected with that test, but will affect pH, algae growth, and/or water color.

Rocks and wood and stuff is ok, but make sure to scour it thoroughly and boil it it hot water. If you mean plants, then definitely no. Terra-cotta pots might have some of the fertilizer in it, unless you just bought it. Boil those in hot water also.

Yes fine as long as you clean them well. Some rocks can change the ph of your water though. Put a drop or two of ordinary vinegar on the rock, if it fizzes dont put it in your tank. Also wood can often lower the ph of your water.

Sure, if you boil them for a few minutes to kill all microorganisms. It would be fine. I wouldn't use soap, just boil.
