I think people will say designed by chance.

Science teaches us that human beings came about due to evolution, so neitherchance nor design.

The real question maybe should be, did Life come about by Chance or Design.

if Life is the outcome of chance then Humans are part of the "problem" of HOW Life came about by chance.

The worrying thing for science as it goes about trying to work out How Life came about by chance is that no part of a "problem" has ever found its own solution.

So really, the only hope we have of understanding the "problem" is if we came about by design.

Ramblings of a mad-man I know, but I too am entitled to my opinion.

Addition: re vedasrock answer above. There are more than 1 type of automobile. And even though an auto may come off the production line perfect, things start to go wrong. Then they need maintenance etc. The human brain is just slightly more complex than an automobile engine.

Answering this question can only be accomplished by rational inference, not by empirical proofs-- thus making it one of the most vexing questions of our time. In the end, one must make a prudential judgement on the basis of the rational inferences which are provided as evidence by the proponents of each position. In either case, one is making what amounts to be an act of faith. For myself, the great mystery that advocates of both positions have to contend with are these: If one asserts "design" does this Designer have any kind of relationship with what has been designed and what is the nature of the Designer and his motives-- especially given our experience of evil? And, if one asserts "chance" how does one account for the perplexing fact that the universe that we just happen to be conscious of just happens to be intelligible?

It could well be partly design and partly chance, just as the birth of any human being normally is.

Between you and me, the reason I answered this way is because I could not take a chance with an either/or answer in the absence of real knowledge on the issue.

i am currently reading bill bryson's " a short history of nearly everything ". in it, he describes how the odds were severely stacked against there even being life on earth and then goes on to give an impression of the remote probabilities that led to the development of the correct amino acids and proteins and then the evolution and extinctions of species that led to human beings as we are today. however, many of the contributors in the different scientific fields held the view that there was a creator and did not see any inconsistency in this. i personally do not believe that there was a creator, just the very improbable sequence of events that led to us being how we are, if circumstances had been different we would have turned out differently or not at all, or maybe rendered obsolete by some more brutal or more intelligent species.

you know if it was design the production and outcome would have been "perfect" everytime - in the manufacturing industry e.g. automobiles when I design a new care "perfectly", all units rolled through assembly line would be identical in size, color and perform similarly under same conditions.

But with human beings, well, we have tall and short, fat and slim, delinquents and intelligent, perverts and sickos - the list is endless - if there had been a so-called Master Designer, he wouldn't have allowed these design errors.

So yes, it's all chance.

That depends on whether you want a rational or an irrational response. Rationally, of course, chance. Irrationally, anything you want.
