The amount of answers received is NOT what makes a question successful. A question is successful if it ends up educating in some way or other. I'd hate to think that some of the more "popular questions" like "What did you have for dinner?" rate as more successful than a question that required research to provide a solid and correct answer, even if only 1 or 2 people went to the trouble to provide that research.

You only need one answer to make a question successful, as long as it is the right answer!! Personally I prefer about 10 then as you say you dont have to wade through 40 or so fo find the right one!!!
The answers I dont like are from people who dont read the question properly!!!

LOL. I would prefer good answers. Quality over quantity.
I would hate wading through over 40 questions because I'll get a headache. But I need sufficient answers to get different perspectives and so... Perhaps around 5 to 10 unique answers would be sufficient for me. Haha.

If it's a sensible question and you get the one right answer then that's enough. Sometimes 10 differing opinions can be more confusing than helpful. 40 plus answers tends to happen in the realms of Polls & Surveys and usually the more banal the question (What's your favourite....?) the more puddin's tend to respond.

The more the better in my opinion. I once asked a question in parenting that got over 200 answers.

I like to get a lot of answers although I'm happy at times if I only get one (because of the number of times Y!A doesn't post them straight away).

I'm far more interested in quality than quantity. I'm happy with one response if it answers the question. What really annoys me is getting 40 responses and no answers

I've never asked a question before (here) but I think the more the merrier for responses, but if 6 people replied to one of mine, I'd be pretty happy.

Well I prefer around 20. But I would say about 10 is normal.
