I have a family member who belongs to a well known web site where they enter daily journals. They do not have a restriction, where only a few friends can read, but it is an open file and all you have to do is type in a name and the journal comes up. Ironically, their file caption states, "My life is an open book". I recently typed in their name and found some things written in anger about my family and shared it with my husband. Now I'm being accused of breaking the law and invading privacy, when just anyone could type in a name and read it. Am I in trouble for this?

No. If it is of Public use, it means just that. You are safe. They are just mad you seen it. Actually, you may be able to sue them for harassment/slander depending on what they said and what info they gave out.

Their would be no expectation of privacy when posting information on a public web-site that anybody can read. It sounds like these people are just trying to scare you. There is nothing they can do to you legally about reading what they posted on a public web-site. Tell them they have no idea what their talking about.

You have broken no law, if he/she is stupid enough to leave a site opened for anyone to read then they deserve whatever they get.
They are trying to scare you, tell them to stuff it. Let them know that the world can read there information and maybe they should remove it before they are the ones in trouble..

It sounds like you did nothing illegal, and the person is just mad that a family member found it,and is now trying to scare you with a threat. The next time it's brought up tell them go ahead, and sue me,and I'll sue you for defamation of caracter for accusing me falsely of invasion of privacy. That will be the end of it. Good Luck.

No, haha. You are in trouble when the police show up at your door. When some zealot accuses you because they feel like an idiot for getting caught, its just irony. Let this clown say whatever they want, you broke zero laws. If you didn't steal a password or commit fraud to get this info it is public domain and therefore accessible to anyone, ever here in Europe...whats the URL? HAHA j/k.

If they havent set the blog to private and you entered it via public forum then no laws have been broken and they are just pissed because they got caught for their rantings.

No.....if the information is in the public domain then it's no different than telling your husband what you read in the newspaper.

Nope, if they didn't protect the information that's their fault. You'd only me in trouble if you had hacked in to get the information.
