That is very broad question as the laws vary from state to state and even city to city.

Constitutionally Americans do have a right to bear arms, unless you're a felon or you have been convicted of a crime that involves a violet act against another person - For example, in some states a person convicted of domestic violence cannot possess a gun for a certain number of years.

As long as the weapon is in your home, there is very little you have to worry about. It's the moment that a gun leaves your home, that laws can get very sticky.

Typically, weapons used for Hunting have very little restriction (Rifles, Shotguns and so on) - For instance, in many areas you cannot fire a gun with a certain radius of a city/town/residential area or even have it loaded within those areas. Handguns on the other hand can have very strict limitation, depending on where you live in the US.

All states provide for a concealed weapons permits, the stringent qualifications to obtain one varies from state to state.

No felon (regardless of the type of crime) can ever possess a gun. Some states do provide for an exemption after a certain number of years has passed for *hunting purposes* only and only for non-violet offenses, typically the Governors office need to provide that waiver and it's usually very hard to obtain.

As they showed last month in Virginia you can go into a gun shop and lie all you want , and walk out with a gun..

The computers, and back ground checks that are supposed to protect people, and prevent illegal sales of guns they just saw don't mean s**t, as the government agencies don't record and share the information that they are supposed to.

I do not blame the gun shop owners, they are just doing a sale based on the fact that the government and police agencies, and courts are supposed to post accurate records and share them legally, for the back ground check and security to work properly.

This is just a false sense of security set up to pay a bunch of over-paid beauracratic paper pushers !!!!!

Not that you would do that,, just that the securities laws are crap.

Not wanting to answer anything. I have a weapon where it has a shorter than normal length. Received as a gift, it has a short barrel which I like. But the butt-stock is also short and I cannot hit any target with accuracy. I am trying to find out if I put a standard length butt-stock on it if it will still be legal as a handgun. (the original packaging says it is) or with the modification, be considered an illegal rifle due to the barrel length. I don t know why it would be illegal as it is not like a shotgun and spread shot. Can anyone help me please.

in basic terms like Clinton and the Waco fiasco the government will enable the ATF take the autumn for his or her extensive embarrassment. Face it, we've a corrupt gadget of government from Bush on returned without indications of having any better.

There are 20,000 laws. There isn't enough room to explain what they are in this forum. Background checks are required on all purchases.
