Hey,
I'm a fairly computer savvy college student who is looking for an external hard drive to store videos, music, and a TON of photos. As far as size i know the more the merrier because i am only going to be needing more and more storage space. When looking for an HD though, it gives me 3 options, USB, firewire, and ethernet. I am pretty sure i just need the USB but that is my main question. Also, any suggestions on sites or stores to buy from? I normally use frys.com but have been shopping around. Thanks!
- btw, this is for a toshiba portege tablet, not a desktop pc

I've bought at least 20 different USB external drives in the last year and I have to say that I like the MyBook 250GB ($79) and the MyBook 500GB ($129) drives the best. They are the quietest (some are very noisy), simpliest to use (shuts down and starts up with your computer - don't have to switch on and off seperately), and holds quite a lot of stuff. They also stack nicely (compared to some that fall over easily, or can't stack at all). Staples sometimes have them on sale, ditto with Fry's.

HD are expensive so here is an alternative, Why not get an External DVD-RW and get about 25 DVD rewritable, as each DVD holds about 4,7Gig there would be plenty of room and when one disk is full simply put in another, and being rewritable you can use them over and over again. Not only that but you can move data from one PC to another very easily. Just a though hope it helps.

The connection depends on your tablet computer. If you have firewire than use that option if not USB. Newegg.com is good. I also try Tigerdirect.com and if you know what you are looking for pricegraber.com is a great search engine.

Newegg.com is a great reliable site, and it allows you to select "USB, Firewire, etc."
Newegg is no.1 in customer service, and has fairly competitive prices (can't compete with Fry's, I think)

eSATA is the fastest external drive interface, with Firewire coming in no.2, I think. USB is fairly slow.

USB and firewire are local to the one machine.

USB 1.1 is slower than firewire.
USB 2.0 is faster and a lot more common than firewire.

Ethernet is going to need a network. But any computer on the network is going to be able to see the drive. Useful if you want to be able to see your pictures on multiple computers.

As for where to buy. . . why limit yourself to one store?

500GB external drive with USB2.0 interface. Internally it uses a SATA interface. 7200 rpms with 16MB buffer. This is great portable storage! It should take you a while to fill it up!
