Or, completely different, Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion...

For wit, I'd HIGHLY recommend Kurt Vonnegut (any of his books, but Hocus Pocus and Welcome to the Monkey House are my favorite), he's brilliant, and is both thought provoking and funny. Mark Twain and Joseph Heller (Catch 22) are also good for that. If you don't mind slightly dense language, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is actually one of the wittiest books ever written. I've read it many times, and it never gets any less enjoyable.

If its wit you are looking for then I suggest David Lodge-
Below is a Wikipedia entry on Lodge. I suggest reading Therapy and Small World.
If you are into Fantasy books then Piers Anthony and Terry Pratchett- are must reads

For wit and humor, I like anything by Christopher Moore. It's really kind of quirky and offbeat humor, though.

I've never laughed so hard as when I read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. The whole "trilogy" (of 5 books I think) is hilarious.

If you haven't read him, Jasper Fforde is quite funny. I love his Thursday Next and Nursery Crimes series. The first one is about a woman who discovers she can travel into books and that there is a whole world inside them. The second features detective Jack Spratt, and in the first one he solves the murder of humpty dumpty. They're a lot of fun to read.

I immediately thought of Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. It's a clever novel. The chapters are relatively short, so it goes fast.
