it depends on what type of fish.... a 1/2ft to 3 feet is plenty.
youll probably need mesh over it so birds dont eat your fish.

It depends on where you live. Assuming you live in the contenental US, no deeper than 3.5 feet would be needed in any area, 3 feet in most. You will only need to create one area, called a deep well, that is at that depth. It should be large enough for all of the fish to comfortably swim in and not be touching. Remember to account for the adult size of the fish when planning that space.

Depends where you live, if it gets cold/freezes in the winter, I believe it's recommended to have the deepest point at least 3 feet deep.
