Techno is as AMERICAN as Apple pie! Techno is a form of electronic dance music that became prominent in Detroit, Michigan during the mid-1980s with influences from Chicago House, electro, New Wave, Funk. The FIRST techno was made in DETROIT by a AFRICAN AMERICAN group call the The Belleville Three. They were considered "FIRST WAVE". Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles were VERY IMPORTANT to the techno or afro-futurism movement. Techno is based of ELECTRO, Chicago House and Ska. Electro is made from ska, reggae, pop, punk. Funk is made from Soul. SO, WITH ALL THAT, WHy do people say the Europeans invented Techno?
Is this HISTORY APPROPRIATION?

Actually, HOUSE music is American. Whether you're in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Miami or Los Angeles, house is what dominates the scene. And yes, it was brought about in the early 80's by artists such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Frankie Bones, etc...

TECHNO was first brought to the world by Kraftwerk (as Cookie Cutter mentioned) in 1970, with their first self-titled release. They were the first act to ever incorporate samples and digitized/synthesized noise into their music. Whether you like them or not, every fan of electronica owes them a debt of gratitude for being the originators. Ask anyone in the biz; they'll tell you that Kraftwerk did for electronica what Elvis did for rock.

For every ONE band experimenting with what would one day be called 'Techno' in America, there were 10 bands doing the same in Europe. Ever heard of KRAFTWERK, the premiere techno band, not only from Europe, but doing their thing since the early 70s! The were/are The Beatles of techno. Just because we had a handfull dabbling in 'techno' here in the states does not mean we own it, especially since it came from Europe! Blondie had the 3rd ever rap hit and the first ever rap song in the top 10. They don't get any of the respect they deserve because they were a 'white new wave' band. That's just wrong...
