I have to say - what else could it be??

Commonly called a 'Red-Back Spider' by us literal-minded Aussies.

Sounds like an Australian red back. The shape of the red patch is variable and it is sometimes absent. Most commonly a stripe or perhaps a long narrow triangle. I once read that the black widow of North America and the Australian red back were very closely related and there had been speculation that the red back was descended from black widows which arrived on early ships from North America. Might be true but probably not. Who knows?
