check out the 'thomasina e jordan indian tribes of virginia recognition act'...it has cleared the house, and now is awaiting senate action. essentially, this bill would grant federal recognition to the 6 tribes in virginia (already recognized by the state)...normally there is an administrative process to go through for a tribe to be recognized, but the virginia tribes have had that avenue shut off due to government policies going back to the 1920's that classified virginia indians as 'colored'...which screwed up birth records, marriage certificate (my wife's parents had to go to DC to get married in order for their wedding certificate to say "indian" and not "colored")...this is especially pertinent now, while the jamestown commemoration is going on-these are the tribes that the colonists first encountered, and had it not been for the tribes, the colony would have not survived...and our government doesn't even recognize them...my wife's tribe, the chickahominy, have been living in the same area since long before the english came-these are good people-kind, hard-working, extremely spiritual, fiercely patriotic...who deserve to be recognized for who they are, how they contributed to the creation and survival of this great nation, and for how they have survived and endured despite centuries of hostility, neglect, abuse...

Intrusion into the lands intended for the Native Americans. Although there are existing laws, the provisions are not followed to the letter by many people.
