Turn the helmet over.
The strap will be at a different angle, easier to hook on.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
It would've helped to know what bike you have, as helmet hooks are different on different bikes.

Go to - Index - Helmet - Lock Extension.
Some manufacturers include a helmet extender in the tool kits.
Look up your bike here and go to - Tools. Check if your bike came with one.

I have a helmet lock that attached to my license plate cover. It works great, nothing is in the way and it doesn't stick out.

If your helmet lock looks anything like mine (see pic in link below), then its simply a matter of hooking the metal D-rings of chin strap through the lock hasp and snapping it shut.
